Eight killed, 13 missing after boat capsizes off Indonesia's Kalimantan island
Updated
Eight people have been killed after a boat carrying 48 passengers including children sank off Indonesia's Kalimantan island, rescue officials said.
The national rescue agency said in a statement that 13 passengers remained missing while the rest had been rescued.
The boat was on its way from Tanjung Selor to Tarakan, on the Indonesian side of Borneo island, when it overturned and sank.
The boat's manifest says it was carrying 43 adults and five children.
It was not immediately clear what caused the accident.
Manangap Djumala, a search and rescue official in Tarakan, says police are investigating the cause of the accident.
Boat accidents are common in Indonesia because of poorly enforced safety regulations in the world's largest archipelago nation, where ships are a popular and relatively cheap form of transportation.
In July 2017, a speed boat capsized off Indonesia's Borneo island, killing at least 10 people, police and rescue officials said at the time.
