SILCHAR: A 40-year-old man on Monday committed suicide after he found his name missing from the first NRC draft. The victim was identified by cops as Hanif Khan.

Khan, who earned his living by driving a pick-up van, was found hanging from a tree in Kashipur area in Silchar, where he lived along with his wife and three sons, around 7am, hours after the NRC was declared.

His wife claimed Hanif was tense over the list for the past few days. She said, "He would often ask what would happen if our names didn't appear. He was afraid of going out and returned home whenever he saw a police vehicle." SP (Cachar) Rakesh Raushan said, "We are investigating the case. We have reports that Hanif had been suffering from depression. Hanif's family is yet to lodge a police complaint."
