IT has been a golden year for York's restaurants after many of them picked up prestigious national awards and topped lists for their culinary excellence.

There has been no shortage of great options for visitors to the city looking for a meal or residents willing to travel further afield for a treat.

Awards range from TripAdvisor reviewers rating their favourite eateries to globally recognised lists.

The most recent recognition went to Le Cochon Aveugle, which is inside the bar walls in Walmgate, which was the only restaurant in the city to make the Harden’s Best UK Restaurants, when it was listed at number 40.

Chef Josh Overington put the success down to "four year's hard graft" and praised the restaurant's blind tasting menu and varied food choices for helping it to stand out from others across the north of England.

Millers and Fish and Chips, in Haxby, have continued to be successful in 2017 after picking up gongs for the standard of their food.

A panel judged the shop’s frying skills, assessed their menu development, innovation and staff training processes before naming them the regional winner in the National Fish and Chip Awards.

Skosh, in Micklegate, York, continues to pick up awards and was this year given a Bib Gourmand Award.

Michelin launched the Bib Gourmand in 1997 as a more budget-friendly alternative to its star rating system, rewarding restaurants serving three courses for under £28 that offer good quality, good value cooking.

This year also saw Skosh and its Micklegate neighbour, The Rattle Owl, entered the Good Food Guide 2018 along with Low Petergate’s Mr P’s Curious Tavern.

Families and couples looking for a more low-key night out can take a short trip outside the city to Stillington, where they will find The Bay Tree, officially Yorkshire's Pub of the Year.

The village pub, which reopened under new owners Harri Scott and Ed Allen in 2015, was crowned Best in Yorkshire at the White Rose awards in October.

The win marked a huge coup for the couple, who took on The Bay Tree as their first business venture, reopening after a major refurbishment of the Stillington venue.
