
A street has been cordoned off by police in Brunswick Village.
Officers descended on the house shortly after midnight on New Year’s Day.
Several residents say they saw forensic investigators entering the house in the early hours of the morning.
The house is on a small terraced row between a One Stop shop and a hairdressers in a quiet, residential part of the suburb.
Northumbria Police have not yet confirmed what they are investigating.
One resident, who did not wish to be named, said: “About 30 police cars must have come and gone over the course of the night.
“They went into the house but didn’t have to break the door down.
“I haven’t seen anybody taken out of the house but police officers and forensic teams have been coming and going all night and morning.
“They’ve taken out boxes of stuff and you could see them taking photographs inside.”
Another resident said: “Nothing like this has happened before, it’s a quiet street.“There’s never been any bother at that house.”

The road is still cordoned off, but Northumbria Police are yet to put out any information about the incident.
