ISLAMABAD: The National Security Advisers (NSAs) of Pakistan and India met in Bangkok a day after the mother and wife of Indian spy, Kulbhushan Jadhav met him in Islamabad on Dec.25.

The venue and date of the meeting between Lt Gen (retd) Nasir Khan Janjua and his Indian counterpart Ajit Doval were, however, not linked to issues relating Jadhav’s meeting with his wife and mother, according to the India media as report by the Pakistani newspapers.

It had been decided between the two sides earlier this month, and it was a “pre-scheduled meeting,” the Indian media quoted sources as telling it, adding that official Indian sources refused to comment on the subject.

Two days later, Janjua held a five-hour-long meeting with former prime minister Nawaz Sharif at the latter’s Jati Umra residence in Raiwind.

Matters of national security and relations with neighbouring countries including India were reportedly discussed in Thursday’s meeting.

However, some other reports on Sunday denied the meeting between Sharif and Janjua.

Meetings in third countries afford the two officials some space, away from the limelight, which the continual gaze of media on both sides of the border entails. It also gets around the tricky issue of the Pakistan NSA meeting leaders of Kashmir’s Hurriyat Conference, something which had led to cancellation of his visit to New Delhi in August 2015.

It was reported that in the instant meeting in Bangkok, Janjua also raised the issue of unrest in Kashmir, besides targeting of civilians in Pakistani villages along the Line of Control (LoC).
