Happy New Year! Stunning London Eye fireworks welcome Britain into 2018

THE LONDON Eye erupted into a stunning display of colour as fireworks shot out from the iconic structure and brought in the 2018 New Year for Britons.

The London Eye erupted into a stunning display of colourful fireworks

After Big Ben struck midnight stunning reds, blues and greens sparkled in the night sky as revellers enjoyed the festivities along the banks of the River Thames.

The London Mayor Sadiq Khan described the display as the city's biggest ever, lasting around 12 minutes before revellers broke out into a traditional rendition of Auld Lang Syne.

This year's spectacular fireworks display featured a soundtrack dominated by female artists to mark the centenary of women being granted the vote.

Songs by Aretha Franklin, Annie Lennox, Dua Lipa, Florence Welch and Ariana Grande were among those included in the women-only second half of the world-famous show.

More than 100,000 ticket-holders filled the banks of the River Thames in London for the 12-minute display after Big Ben's bongs rung out across the capital at midnight, having been turned back on for the festive period.

After being silenced for renovation work, Big Ben's iconic bongs rang for only the second time since August to usher in 2018 – they will fall silent again at 1pm to continue ongoing crucial repairs of the Elizabeth Tower.

Ariana Grande's hit One Last Time was also played during the display, in what is thought to be a touching tribute to the victims of the Manchester Arena attack.

Harrowing footage of the 24-year-old singer performing the ballad in the closing moments of her May 22 concert circulated in the days after the attack.

The video was taken moments before Salman Abedi detonated a bomb which injured more than 100 and killed 22, including an eight-year-old girl.

Earlier The BBC said: “London’s famous firework display will be choreographed to fit a specially edited medley of music.

“The celebrations along the Thames will end with a traditional rendition of Auld Lang Syne, before the action switches back inside as Nile and CHIC continue the party with a raft of hits including Good Times, Le Freak and Everybody Dance.”

Guy Freeman, editor special events for the BBC, promised that tonight’s jubilations will have Britons up and downs the country “boogieing” all night long.

He said: “I am over the moon that Nile and CHIC will be heading up our New Year’s Eve celebrations.

“With a host of timeless disco party classics on their setlist, I am sure that living rooms up and down the land will be boogieing along until the wee small hours!”

The New Year has already been brought in across the rest of Europe and stunning firework displays also welcomed the New Year for Dubai, Hong Kong and Sydney, Australia – where the iconic Harbour Bridge erupted in a burst of colour.

Around 1.6 million spectators gathered in Sydney Harbour to witness one of the most stunning pyrotechnic shows in the world at 1pm UK GMT on Sunday (midnight on Monday local time).

New York City has since welcomed in the New Year with one of the coldest Times Square ball drop on record. Revellers braved -12C temperatures as they cheered in 2018.
