Boozy Britons see in 2018 with drunken revelry in messy New Year's Eve celebrations

BOOZED-UP Britons took to the streets last night to ring in the New Year and didn’t let the weather dampen their spirits.

Millions of revellers across the country put on their glad rags to ring in 2018 but it got a bit much for some.

it was one of the busiest nights of the year for emergency services as Big Ben chimed us into the new year. 

Hogmanay party goers took to the streets of Edinburgh in kilts as they sang Auld Lang Syne.

Police are called out to deal with brawling drunks in Nottingham and celebrations in Newcastle turned sour as many revellers were pictured being sick in the streets.

Some girls ditched their fancy high heels in Birmingham after a pard night of partying and took to the streets i their bare feet.

During the first hour of 2018, the London Ambulance Service said it answered 337 calls, with many of the patients treated for alcohol-related injuries and illnesses.

Deputy director of operations Pauline Cranmer said: “It has been a busy night for us, and we've been taking up to 400 calls an hour, when we normally get around 250.”

Paramedics set up nine treatment centres around the capital to avoid clogging up A&E departments.

Record numbers of armed police were on the streets in the wake of four major terrorist attacks last year.

With Britain on heightened alert, specialist army units were also on standby around the country.

They are believed to include anti-terror SAS teams and bomb disposal experts.

Police stressed there was no specific threat – but they were taking no chances following atrocities in London and Manchester this year.

Ms Cranmer added: “We would encourage them to consider using other healthcare services such as walk-in centres or calling NHS 111 for health advice to ensure our medics are free and able to respond to the patients in serious and life-threatening conditions.”

More than 100,000 ticket-holders filled the banks of the River Thames in London for the 12-minute display after Big Ben's bongs rung out across the capital at midnight, having been turned back on for the festive period.  

In Edinburgh, 150,000 took to the streets to celebrate Hogmanay despite earlier concerns that Storm Dylan would threaten proceedings.

Edinburgh's New Year celebrations are legendary and fireworks were launched from Edinburgh Castle at 9pm, 10pm and 11pm in a countdown to midnight when a “soundscaped” fireworks display entertained the audience for the first nine minutes of 2018. Rag ’n’ Bone Man headlined the concert in the Gardens.

Stunning firework displays also welcomed the New Year for Dubai, Hong Kong and Sydney, Australia – where the iconic Harbour Bridge erupted in a burst of colour. 

Around 1.6 million spectators gathered in Sydney Harbour to witness one of the most stunning pyrotechnic shows in the world at 1pm UK GMT on Sunday (midnight on Monday local time).

New York City has since welcomed in the New Year with one of the coldest Times Square ball drop on record. Revellers braved -12C temperatures as they cheered in 2018.
