The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Barcelona (Spain), Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton near Cambridge (UK), Rome (Italy).

EMBL is looking for a Research Technician / Laboratory Officer in Charge to join the group of Dr. Martin Beck. The Beck laboratory in specialized in integrative structural biology approaches and studies mechanisms of nucleocytoplasmic exchange and protein complex assembly. The successful candidate will manage the laboratory operation on a daily basis, assist the principal investigator and support the group members in meeting the research goals of the laboratory. The post holder should be curious to learn new techniques and will enjoy providing training and assistance to other group members. The post holder should be interested in pursuing research projects in an independent and collaborative manner. An initial contract of 3 years will be offered to the successful applicant, but can be renewed depending on performance.

Qualifications and Experience

A university or technical school degree in a relevant field (Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Cell Biology, (Bio)Physics or (Bio)Engineering) is a prerequisite. Applicants with higher degrees will be considered as well. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in at least one or more of the following areas: molecular biology, cryo electron microscopy and structure determination, mass spectrometry, protein sorting, RNA localization and protein complex assembly pathways. Experience in genetics, molecular cloning, mammalian cell culture, imaging and image analysis, programming or statistics will be extremely valuable, but training will be provided if needed. The candidate will be very well organized, passionate about laboratory management and able to work independently. The key selection criterion will be the motivation and ability to work in an interdisciplinary team and to support ongoing research efforts with a high level of intellectual creativity, persistence and dedication. The candidate must have excellent communication, teamwork and interpersonal skills. Fluency in English is required.
