Bud Werner Memorial Library in Steamboat Springs is bringing community sand painting back for the new year this Wednesday and Thursday. This hands-on event will be open to everyone from noon to 6 p.m. each day in Library Hall.
Inspired by the Drepung Loseling monks' Mandala on the Yampa art installations at the library, the Steamboat Springs community has participated in creating many hands-on public sand paintings. The library invites everyone back to Library Hall to revisit their individuality and creative spirit while sand painting on the community sand painting table. The design is from the bestselling "inky adventure" adult coloring book "Lost Ocean" by Johanna Basford.
Chakpurs, the monks' authentic sand painting tools, along with plentiful colored sand, will be available for everyone to try this ancient Tibetan art form. A chakpur is a metal funnel with a grated surface, along which the artist runs a metal rod. The vibration causes sand to flow like liquid onto the platform. The result is a colorful design that is enjoyed by all, then wiped away in the spirit of impermanence upon completion.

Weigh and Win kiosk set up at Northwest Colorado Health

Weigh and Win is a free community program that provides cash incentives to participants who reach their weight-loss goals. Participants weigh in quarterly at a kiosk located in the lobby at Northwest Colorado Health, 940 Central Park Drive, Suite 101 in Steamboat Springs.
Between weigh-ins, participants receive daily emails or texts with tips on healthy eating, exercise and overcoming weight-loss challenges. Weigh and Win is a nonprofit program aimed at reducing obesity rates in Colorado. Participation is free.

Donated quilts needed for program to help those in need

The program that provides donated quilts and handmade blankets to the Steamboat Springs Police Department to be used to help victims and others in emergency situations is in need of quilts and knitted or crocheted blankets. The donated quilts need to be at least 36 by 36 inches but may be larger. They also need to be washable and colorful. Completed quilts and blankets can be donated at Sew Steamboat.
