New Delhi, Jan 1: Popular messaging app WhatsApp crashed on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday as it could not handle the traffic it received when people rushed to send their new year’s wishes. The WhatsApp went down for about an hours and was not restored until 1:00 am. It suffered a widespread global outage after messaging service faced service disruption.

WhatsApp service resumed after temporarily crashing in several countries. “WhatsApp users around the world experienced a brief outage today that has now been resolved. We apologise for the inconvenience,” a WhatsApp spokesperson said. Several people used social media to vent their frustrations using the hashtag #whatsappdown.

“WhatsApp” started trending on the micro-blogging site Twitter in no time, and the Twitterati went scrounging for the best GIFs to express their feelings. “#WhatsApp users in different regions of the World facing downtime. Retweet if you’re facing the same issue. #WhatsAppDown #HappyNewYear #NewYear,” one user tweeted.

It came as a boon to some.”A group admin just threatened to remove me and now Whatsapp is down, making him unemployed. See God,” read one tweet. But others were clearly not happy! “Why won’t WhatsApp be down when some of you will be uploading status updates every seconds like you are sewing,” read one tweet.

WhatsApp’s is used by more than 1.2 billion people around the world. The messaging app is a key tool for communications and commerce in many countries.
