Showing no sign of backing down after expressing its anger at US President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, the Palestinian Authority has now recalled its envoy to the United States, Husam Zumlot. With no further statement, it was announced on Sunday that foreign minister Riyad Malki had made the decision to bring Zumlot home. Prior to the latest move, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas had cancelled scheduled meetings with Vice President Mike Pence when he was to be in the region on a trip that has since been canceled; and announced that the Palestinians would have nothing to do with any peace negotiations under American sponsorship. Since President Trump made his pronouncement on December 6, Palestinians have been holding “days of rage,” expressing unbridled anger in street demonstrations that more often than not turned violent. In addition to the United States, Guatemala also announced it would move its embassy to Jerusalem. The central American nation was denounced as “shameful” by the PA and more recently re-asserted that its decision is final and not for discussion.
