Mumbai, Jan 1: Over 100 Brihanmumbai Corporation (BMC) employees and engineers may face the music after the municipal corporation found illegal construction and violation of rules in over 600 establishments– the employees may face probe and action for dereliction of duty. The civic body demolished illegal construction in many resto-bars across the city on Saturday and Sunday.

A report said that many restaurants and pub owners requested BMC to delay the action in wake of New Year celebrations, which is a huge earning opportunity for eateries, but the civic body went ahead with its demolition drive. The action came a day after 14 people lost their lives in a fire at a pub on the terrace of Kamala Mill Compound, Lower Parel.

The civic body had asked all the deputy municipal commissioners to forms teams to check all resto-bars whether they comply with safety norms or not. Meanwhile, Municipal Commissioner Ajoy Mehta have decided to probe the role of officers and engineers for not taking action against resto-bars that did not comply with rules and safety norms.

“We will put a system in place to fix accountability of each officer. We will also probe the roles of officers and engineers who are working at ward-levels in the same capacity for years and allowed errant structures to flourish,” he was quoted by TOI.

Out of the 14 deceased, 11 were women. Among the dead was a woman who was celebrating her 29th birthday. Many of her friends also perished in the fire.
