Houston Texans general manager Rick Smith is stepping away from the organization in an "extended leave of absence."

After a season-ending 22-13 loss to the Indianapolis Colts, Smith announced in a statement that he was taking time away to be with his wife as she recovers from breast cancer.

"I am eternally grateful to the McNair family for their unwavering support during this trying time," Smith wrote in his statement. "This was an extremely difficult decision for me to make as I love this organization and every member of this both on and off the field. I remained committed to our quest to bring a championship to the city of Houston, yet my family needs me now and they are my priority."

Smith has served as the Texans' general manager since 2006. The team has made the playoffs three times during his tenure.
