A sheriff's deputy was killed and four others were injured in a shooting Sunday morning after officers responded to a domestic disturbance at an apartment complex in suburban Denver.
Two civilians were also injured by the suspected gunman, who was killed and is no longer a threat, officials said.
The incident in Douglas County prompted a shelter in place for residents in the area where the shooting occurred.
Residents in the vicinity were advised to stay inside and avoid exterior walls and windows, the Associated Press reported.
The shooting happened in the course of the investigation at the Copper Canyon Apartments, a complex 16 miles south of Denver, the sheriff’s office said, according to the AP.
A hospital where three people were taken for treatment says those people suffered non-critical injuries, AP reported. Another nearby hospital said it received four patients but wouldn’t release their conditions.
Law enforcement officers escorted the body of the deputy killed from the hospital where he was taken after the incident.
The Douglas County Sheriff's Office, Parker Police Department, Lone Tree Police Department, Castle Rock Police Department and Colorado State Patrol are all on accident alert because of this incident.
During an accident alert, drivers involved in wrecks are asked not to call law enforcement unless a driver is impaired, it's a hit and run, someone is injured or dead or if damaged vehicles are blocking the road.
