Traffic on the busy Mysuru Road was affected for more than half an hour

An under-construction metro pier portal on Mysuru Road collapsed after a heavy truck rammed against it late on Saturday.

The under-construction pier portal at Pantharpalya is nearly 750 meters from Nayandahalli on Mysuru Road. The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (BMRCL) is extending the existing Purple Line from the Mysuru Road station to Kengeri.

Vehicular movement came to a halt for more than half an hour on the busy road after construction materials and debris collapsed, blocking the road. Traffic police were forced to divert the vehicles. Initially, there were reports that pier portals collapsed due to faulty work, which was later rubbished by BMRCL authorities.

BMRCL’s managing director Mahendra Jain told The Hindu that construction materials and debris collapsed after a truck hit the pier portal. The truck, which was carrying heavy loads, was above the concourse slab level. The official said no casualties were reported. “The incident did not happen in the operational reach. It happened at an under-construction site. The metro construction employees were about to start their night shift. Fortunately, even the truck driver escaped unhurt,” he added.

Later, BMRCL spokesperson U.A. Vasanth Rao tweeted stating that the blockages had been removed and road cleared for traffic.
