BESUT: The wave barrier put in Kampung Pengakalan Atap, Kuala Besut, is ineffective at keeping the residents of the village safe from the threat posed by big waves due to the high tide phenomenon.
Kuala Besut State Assemblyman Tengku Zaihan Che Ku Abdul Rahman said the 50m long barrier built at a cost of RM300,000 is not high enough to keep out the sea water from entering the homes of the villagers.
"I hope the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) can provide an allocation so that another barrier of one metre high can be build to save five families affected by the big waves," he told Bernama, here today.
The high tide phenomenon is expected to bring big waves of up to 3.5m to the Terengganu coastline until Jan 3. — Bernama
