BLOOMINGTON — Chicago St. Ignatius coach Cara Doyle is doing what she loves – teaching young women life lessons through the game of basketball.
“I personally believe that for girls that play sports, (it) is really important for their development as human beings and certainly as developing as women in the business and moms, or whatever they choose to do in their life," Doyle said. "In this environment, where they have to compete and they have to work together, is such a great learning tool."
Sixteen years ago Doyle won an Emmy Award for producing the ESPN documentary "Sportscentury." Doyle worked as a television producer at ESPN, Fox Television Stations and Intersport from 1998-2005, according to her LinkedIn profile.
Coaching has provided Doyle a unique vantage point that she enjoys. The Wolfpacks’ holiday tournament trip included volunteering at Home Sweet Home Ministries and the Boys and Girls Club of America.
“I think in the media-sense, you’re observing from such a factual standpoint,” she said. “Let’s say (St. Ignatius guard) Molly (Gannon) had 18 points, and then you come and you become part of a family and a team and you realize, wow, that’s a kid who today went to the Boys and Girls club and shoveled snow and those extra things and it just opens your perspective on it.
“I think every coach wished the media would have a better perspective on it.”
