PS4 vs Xbox Games with Gold for January 2018

PS Plus and Xbox Games with Gold freebies have been announced for January 2018.

And after a couple of disappointing months, PlayStation Plus is back to its best, with a couple of blockbuster releases for .

Available from Tuesday, January 2, PS Plus subscribers will be able to download Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and Batman: A Telltale Series.

Over on Xbox Games with Gold, the Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing III will be available on from January 1 until January 31.

Ubisoft's Zombi will join the Xbox One free games lineup on January 16. Subscribers will be able to download it until midnight on February 15.

But which lineup is best? Express Online pits Xbox Games with Gold against PlayStation Plus for January 2018.

Let's start with PlayStation Plus, which features two high profile games in Deus Ex and Batman: The Telltale Series.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided: "Brought to you by a voice so rough and gritty it makes even sandpaper blush, we have the continuing adventures of Swiss army security specialist Adam Jensen.

"Hot off the back of his adventures in 2011’s Deux Ex: Human Revolution, the ultra-augmented corporate henchman returns to Prague as tensions between humans and ‘augs’ reach boiling point.

"Building on the hybrid stealth-action gameplay of the original, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided holds true to its gritty tech-noir roots, taking a Jensen (with all his trademark reluctance) through another explosive story of corruption, greed and subterfuge."

Batman: The Telltale Series: "Sticking closely to the theme of brooding antiheroes who’ve got more needless gadgets than an Amazon wish list, we have the big man himself: Bruce Wayne.

"Last year, Telltale Games brought their inimitable comic-book style to the DC Universe, delivering a completely original story driven by player choice, branching narratives and careful investigation.

"Taking on the alternating roles of billionaire playboy and caped crusader, work to uncover the culprit behind an escalating tide of crime that’s gripped the city, contending with familiar foes like Catwoman and The Penguin as you prowl the night.

"Told in five successive episodes, the outcomes are dictated by how you choose to play: cowled avenger or charismatic businessman, there’s more than one to be the Batman."

There's more of a horror theme on Xbox One, where Gold subscribers can download Van Helsing and Zombi.

The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing III

"Van Helsing III will make its debut on Xbox One and will be Xbox One X Enhanced upon release.

"In this final chapter of the trilogy, you’ll see Borgovia in its darkest state. The civil war may be over, but a strange cult is prophesizing the end of the world. Van Helsing will do battle against even more terrifying beasts with an expanded arsenal for six specialized character classes and a more detailed, diverse leveling system.

"He’s now prepared to face his archenemy in this world of squabbling factions and criminals, but he won’t be alone — Lady Katarina, his ghost companion, is still with him and her story is set to be revealed as well."

Zombi

"How long do you think you can survive in the streets of London, surrounded by the infected among the roads and underground canals? If you happen to fall victim to these mindless enemies, you’ll lose all your possessions. Start again as a different survivor and you can fight your way back to recover your stash. Plan well and you may make it out alive."

And the winner is...

In the battle between PS Plus and Xbox Games with Gold, it's the PlayStation 4 lineup that wins for January 2018.

Not only does PlayStation Plus boast higher profile releases, but the overall Metascore is much better.

And it's all thanks to Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, which scores 84% on Metacritic, while Batman: A Telltale Series racks up a Metascore of 68%.

That's compared to 72% for Zombi on Xbox One and 64% for the PC version of The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing III.

Hopefully Microsoft will respond with an improved lineup in February, because PS Plus is the clear winner this month.
