Sault Ste. Marie Prepares for First Ever NYE Ball Drop

One of the oldest cities in Michigan is ready to bring in the New Year on a high note.

Sault Ste. Marie turns 350 years old at the stroke of midnight on Sunday.

The city will mark the big celebration with their first ever ball drop.

The project has been in the making for five months.

Crews were out Saturday putting the finishing touches on the 3 foot 100 pound ball complete with 1,200 LED lights.

“Excited and nervous.  Yes, very excited and very nervous!  The second it hits the ground, very relieved and excited.  A little bit of everything, a blend!” said Thomas Korasal of Prism Energy.

The ball drop takes place at Island Books and Crafts at the corner of Ashmun and Portage in downtown Sault Ste. Marie.
