Pagasa: Rainy New Year's Day for most of Philippines

MANILA, Philippines — It is going to be a rainy first day of the new year for most parts of the country.

In its 4 p.m. weather bulletin on December 31, Pagasa said that two weather systems, the tail end of a cold front and the northeast monsoon, continue to bring rain in the country on January 1.

Manila, according to the state weather bureau, will have fair weather with scattered rain showers. Cebu City, meanwhile, will have a rainy January 1 due to the tail end of a cold front and the nearing low pressure area.

Davao City will also be rained on due to the low pressure area that entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility at 3:00 a.m. on December 31.

Pagasa said that at 3:00 p.m., the new LPA is located 850 km east of Surigao City.

It is expected to make landfall over Eastern Visayas and Caraga between the evening of January 1 and the morning of January 2.

It will cross over Sulu, where it may develop into a tropical depression. If it does, it will be named Agaton, according to a list of typhoon names .

Agaton, possibly the first storm for 2018, is expected to bring, moderate and heavy rains in Visayas and Mindanao that can trigger flooding and landslides.

Parts of Mindanao are still recovering from the onslaught of tropical storm Vinta that battered Mindanao earlier this month.

According to the latest data of the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council, 17,302 families remain in 90 evacuation centers as of Sunday morning.
