NR starts construction of New Yamuna Bridge after getting noC from ASI

Northern Railway (NR) is presently undertaking the construction of a New Yamuna Bridge in Delhi in replacement of the Old Yamuna Bridge, which served as the signature bridge on the Delhi-Ghaziabad section and thus connecting the eastern parts to the mainline city. The work of construction of New Yamuna Bridge for replacement of existing old bridge was sanctioned in year 1997-98 at estimated cost of `137 crore. As alignment of the old as well as proposed new bridge is passing through Salimgarh Fort, it required clearance from Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), which delayed the commencement of work after objections from ASI, modification in approach alignment has been done by Railway to accommodate the approaches of new bridge within existing opening in the Salimgarh Fort which is a protected monument. Now, NOC has been obtained from National Monument Authority and work has been resumed in full swing and likely to be completed by June, 2019. Vishwesh Chaube, General Manager of Northern Railway has stressed on early completion of work. RN Singh, Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) stated said that foundation works & piers of new bridge has been completed and the work of steel superstructure is in progress for which a state of the art workshop has been set up near Pragati Maidan for fabrication of 26 steel girders of new bridge weighing 6000 MT. The Old Rail-cum-Road Yamuna Bridge (Loha Pul) near Red Fort was constructed in 1866 by British Govt's East India Railway initially as a single line bridge at a cost of £16,16,335 as a part of project to connect Delhi with Kolkata. It consists of 12 spans of 202.5 feet and two end spans of 34.5 feet each. It was converted into double line in 1913 at an additional cost of £14,24,900. Road deck was provided below Rail line for movement of road traffic. Steel girders were replaced in year 1933-34 at the cost of £23,31,386 to facilitate running of heavier axle load, by the British Company Braithwaite & Co (Ind.) Ltd.
