West Alabama is forecast to begin the New Year with bitterly cold temperatures and wind chill factors potentially in the single digits in some places.
“(People) definitely need to take precautions with these temperatures in the teens and 20s,” National Weather Service meteorologist Jason Holmes said.
The wind chill, or what the temperature feels like, is forecast to be 10 degrees in Tuscaloosa on Monday morning. The high temperatures are expected to be in the 30s, with lows in the teens.
Holmes said homeowners and pet owners should prepare to bring pets and potted plants inside and drip or insulate pipes in unheated areas.
The temperatures Friday are forecast to range from a high of 50 degrees to a low of 32 degrees. Saturday is expected to be similar, though a cold front is expected to move into the area Saturday night, Holmes said.
On Sunday, there remains a slight chance of wintry precipitation. The high is forecast to be 37 degrees with a low of 21.
“It’s low confidence that we will have the moisture around,” Holmes said.
Holmes noted the region will likely see temperatures continue to struggle to get above freezing with another cold front expected later in the week.
“We are not done with this through midweek,” Holmes said.
The National Weather Service’s six- to 10-day outlook continues to predict below average temperatures and drier weather.
