As freezing temperatures have settled across across much of the northern U.S. this week, a new trend has emerged. More people are trying an experiment where they throw boiling water into freezing air, resulting in a sparkling cloud of snow.

Snow flurries move into Hillsborough area

Snow begins to fall in the Hillsborough area of Orange County on Friday afternoon as a winter weather system moves into the Triangle area. The system dumped several inches of snow in the NC mountains earlier in the day.

California wildfire approaches city of Ventura

The blaze broke out on Monday and grew wildly to more than 15 square miles in the hours that followed, consuming vegetation that hasn't burned in decades, Ventura County Fire Sergeant Eric Buschow said. Authorities said that the city of Ventura was likely to feel the effects soon. One person was killed in an auto accident associated with the fire, officials said. They gave no further details.
