Manchester man killed crossing Toms River street

Police said they are still investigating a Friday evening accident in which a pedestrian was struck and killed in Toms River.

James Icklan, 73, of Manchester, was crossing Water Street southbound at Robbins Parkway at about 6:30 p.m. when he was hit by a 2003 Isuzu driven by Carlos Irizarry, 51, of Toms River, who was traveling east on Water Street, Toms River police said in a Facebook post Saturday.

When Irizarry's vehicle entered the intersection and struck Icklan, Icklan was apparently crossing against the pedestrian indicator signal, police said.

"A witness at the scene provided helpful information as to the initial causation of the incident," police said in the post.

Icklan was taken to Community Medical Center, where he died a short time later.

Anyone with information about the incident should contact Toms River Police Officer Pascal Gambardella at 732-349-0150, ext. 1365.
