Galesburg Boys Basketball: Streaks third at Taylorville

TAYLORVILLE - The Galesburg High School boys basketball team finished third for the second straight year at the Taylorville Holiday Tournament on Friday.

Following a 39-36 loss to Sterling in the afternoon, the Silver Streaks gutted out a 49-43 victory over Dunlap, a team that had also beaten on Thursday.

With a 4-1 run through the tourney, Galesburg raised its season record to 12-3.

The Streaks could not break away in a tight game until the final minute when they found success at the free throw line.

Galesburg led 15-14 at the quarter, Dunlap led 23-21 at the half and 31-30 after three quarters  in a game that saw a dozen lead changes.

Cornell Dotson's two free throws finally put the Streaks ahead 44-40 with 1:48 to play and Khalil Hodge and Andrew Anderson hit clutch free throws down the stretch to help preserve the win.

Hodge scored 16 points and Dotson 10 to lead GHS.

The Streaks will play Dunap again on Jan. 15 in Galesburg's Martin Luther King Tourney.

The Streaks' loss to Sterling loss ended a Galesburg  five-game winning streak.

Galesburg ) led early, holding an 18-16 lead at the half and 26-20 with three minutes left in the third quarter. Sterling (6-6) went to the fourth quarter trailing just 28-27.

Cold shooting a turnovers plagued the Streaks in the second half.

With the teams tied 34-34, Sterling pulled ahead with a basket at the 1:20 mark of the fourth quarter and an Aidan Shore layup with 33.6 seconds left put the Warriors up 38-34.

The Streaks missed a game-tying 3-point attempt just before the buzzer.

Hodge scored 14 points for Galesburg. Dotson and Andrew Anderson each had six.
