Panel submits its report on Somanur roof collapse to CM

COIMBATORE: Senior IAS officer Gagandeep Singh Bedi, who led a one-man inquiry committee on Somanur bus stand roof collapse, has submitted his report to CM Edappadi K Palaniswami a few days ago. The roof collapse on September 7, 2017, claimed five lives.

According to sources, stringent action has been recommended by the committee against the local body authorities and building contractor for failing to maintain the building properly. The report also indicated many flaws in the structure of the bus stand in Somanur. Bedi had inspected the Somanur bus stand along with technical experts and structural engineers from the PWD in September 2017. He had also conducted inquiry with the locals. Design engineers were also brought to inspect the building. Core cutting test was conducted to verify the remaining structure of the bus stand and a few pieces of cement concrete cakes were also taken from the structure for testing. The quality of the steel rods used to construct the bus stand building was also tested.


He also visited Annur, Kovilpalayam, Sulur and Kinathukadavu bus stands and prepared a report. Sources said Bedi met the CM a few days ago and submitted his report. The sources added the report will be released by the CMO soon and action will be taken based on it. On September 7, five people ,including a college girl student, died after the extension of the Somanur bus shelter collapsed.
