Burnley star Nick Pope on Tom Heaton rivalry: There is no bitterness

BURNLEY goalkeeper Nick Pope claims his forthcoming battle with Tom Heaton to remain the club’s first choice will not create any bitterness between the pair.

Pope has produced some eye-catching performances between the sticks while Heaton recovers from a shoulder operation sustained in September.

With Heaton expected to return early in 2018 Burnley manager Sean Dyche will soon face a selection dilemma.

But Pope, 25, insists the rapport between himself and Heaton is so good that whoever Dyche chooses will get the support of the other.

“We have a great goalie group. There will be no problems I can assure you of that,” said Pope ahead of Burnley’s trip to Huddersfield today.

“We have worked together over a year and have a great relationship on and off the pitch. We’ll push each other to make other better definitely.

“There is competition. We’ll cross that bridge when we get there. I am playing at the minute but I’m not going to get complacent. I am going to concentrate just as hard as I did in those first few games in the team.”

Huddersfield have lost just one of their last five matches to remain clear of the relegation zone as they aim to establish themselves back among England’s best.

Their achievements have been eclipsed by high-flying Burnley though, with Terriers manager David Wagner claiming Sean Dyche’s work is second only to Pep Guardiola this season.

“After what Guardiola has done this season, what Sean and Burnley have done is outstanding,” he said.

“The results speak for themselves. They are difficult to break down. They have conceded the fourth fewest goals this season in the Premier League. It is an unbelievable achievement.

“We are on a totally different route from Burnley. The size of the clubs and the cities are comparable, but they are on a totally different level to us. I would love to have their wage bill.

“I don’t moan about it but they have played in the Premier League for three of the last four years. Right now there is a big gap between Huddersfield and Burnley.

“We have to write our own story and have to be focused on ourselves. Burnley did it in a totally different way and they made it great.

“The Premier League is different now to when Burnley were first there. It would make no sense to try and follow them.

“Our inspiration has to be our environment. The people, the fans and the stadium – this is our inspiration, not Burnley.”

With the transfer window set to open on Monday, Wagner remains insistent he will not be forced to sell his best players as he looks to stave off relegation back to the Championship.

And the Terriers boss even joked that defender Christopher Schindler is worth more in the current market than the world-record fee Liverpool are set to pay Southampton for Virgil van Dijk.

“How much is Schindler worth? £76million! He was the standout centre-back in the Championship and now in the Premier League he has been outstanding.

“Other clubs can save their money for a phone call. We will not sell any player that I don’t want to sell.”
