Heavy fog disrupts 23 flights at Dhaka airport for 8hrs

Dense fog early yesterday forced Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka to suspend its flight operations for 8 hours.

At least 23 international and domestic flights were delayed between 1:00am and 9:30am, said airport officials.

Flights at the airport were disrupted for the tenth consecutive day due to massive fog, causing sufferings to thousands of passengers, they also said.  

Rezaul Karim, spokesperson for the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh told The Daily Star that eight of the 23 delayed flights were incoming international flights, 14 were outbound domestic flights and one was incoming cargo flight.  

All the incoming international flights were diverted to different airports in India and Myanmar between 1:30am and 4:30am, added Rezaul.

An aircraft of Saudi Arabian Airlines which was scheduled to land at HSIA at 1am yesterday was diverted to Hyderabad airport. The aircraft landed at the HSIA making over 14 hours delay, Joynal Abedin, an information assistant of the airport told The Daily Star.

Besides, two international flights of US-Bangla Airlines were also diverted to Chittagong.

Domestic flight operations resumed at 9:30am and international ones at 10:15am, sources at the airport said.
