Panaji: The implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) across the country has seen casinos pay Rs 40.11 crore as state GST, commissioner of state
GST and commercial taxes, Deepak Bandekar, said.
"Till December 2017, casinos have paid Rs.40.11Cr towards SGST in cash deducting the input tax credit, which was not available to them under the earlier entertainment tax," Bandekar said, adding that it would be false to say no GST was applicable on casino transactions.
"Earlier, casinos were liable to pay an entry fee of Rs 1,000 (per person) and tax of 15% on sale of playing chips to the government under the Goa Entertainment Tax. As the entertainment tax is now subsumed by the GST, all transactions on casinos are liable for GST," Bandekar said in a note. He also said the entry fee for casinos continues to be charged, while sale of chips are liable for 28% GST (14% CGST+ 14% SGST).
"Cooked food is charged at 5% without input tax credit and liquor at 22% under VAT," the note said.
The department also warned that if bills are issued by casinos without mentioning GST, necessary action would be taken against the casinos concerned.
