ALWAR: The Alwar police on Friday busted an extortion racket operated by an inmate from
Ajmer high security prison and arrested two of his associates who had been threatening several businessmen in
Behror of Alwar district.
Behror police station in Alwar had received a complaint that one Sunil Jat, who had been serving a prison term in Ajmer for killing a local leader, had hired Rajesh Pehlwan and
Balram to threaten and extort money from the shopkeepers of Alwar.
"We suspect that as many as Rs 20 lakhs were extorted from different businessmen by the gang," said an official. Interestingly, Sunil Jat was operating the entire operation behind the walls of Ajmer high-security prison which is said to be one of the most secure prison compounds in the state.
"Balram is a sharp shooter who had recently been released on bail. He came in contact with Sunil Jat who tasked him to call businessman and threaten them for the money," said Behror deputy SP
Janesh Singh Tanwar.
According to Tanwar, Jat is a notorious criminal who had killed a local corporator in Behror. "He is a notorious criminal who had been involved in contract killings in Alwar and nearby area," Tanwar said.
The sources in Alwar police informed TOI that Jat has been freely using mobile phones from Ajmer high security prison and instructing his aides. "All through Friday his mobile number was active and we have found that many calls were made from his number. Clearly, there is a major breach of security," said the official.
The officials added that about four businessman on Alwar had paid total Rs 20 lakh to Jat through his aides. The police are Pehlwan and Balram to get more details about their network. "We want to know how did he get a mobile phone inside the prison and if he had other aides too," the officials said.
