Jim Ned claims tournament championship
The Wylie girls basketball team finished the 60th Annual Whataburger Basketball Tournament with a loss to Panhandle in the girls championship bracket fifth place game at Saginaw High School.
With the loss the Lady Bulldogs (15-6) finished the tournament with a 2-2 record and a sixth place finish. The two losses came to Class 4A No. 1 Liberty Hill in the quarterfinals and Saturday's 59-54 loss to Class 2A No. 4 Panhandle.
The Big Country's other Whataburger participant Jim Ned turned out to be giant killers and claimed the tournament championship on Saturday with a 49-43 win against Class 4A No. 1 Liberty Hill in the title game. The Lady Indians got there by defeating Class 1A No. 1 Nazareth in the opener, Class 4A No. 4 Argyle in the quarterfinals, Class 3A No. 5 Wall in the semifinals before taking down their second top-ranked team of the weekend for the tournament crown.
Wylie will be back in action Tuesday hosting Wolfforth Frenship at 1:30 p.m. in the final district tuneup before Brownwood comes to Bulldog Gym at 6:15 p.m. on Jan. 5 for the 5-4A opener.
