In a shocking incident, a 25-year-old youth set ablaze a 32-year-old married woman for allegedly refusing his friendship in South Delhi’s Malviya Nagar area on Friday.
The accused, Chankit, first forcefully entered the woman’s house and then poured petrol on her as well as on his jacket. He threw the jacket after putting it on fire to her and fled. On hearing the girl’s screams, her mother and brother rushed and rescued her. They also sustained burn injuries.
Romil Baaniya, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) said, “The incident took place around 7.35 am on Friday when one Chankit entered the house of the woman with a bottle of petrol.”
The DCP said, “He had liking for the woman but she ignored him. He entered in the house and threatened to kill her. Thereafter, he poured petrol on himself and on her and spread it in the house. Thereafter, he lit his jacket and threw it on her and ran away.”
Baaniya further said, “In the meantime, her brother along with her mother came to stop the fire. They threw the burning jacket outside the house. “
A case has been registered under Section 307 of the IPC at Malviya Nagar police station.
The accused is on the run and police teams have been raiding his possible hideouts.”
Another senior police officer said, “Chankit is a resident of Malviya Nagar area. He used to work as a support staff in a Gurgaon Mall.”
On being asked if their family was aware about the situation, the officer said, “Yes, the families were aware about their relationship. They both had gone missing together on November 17. However she came back on November 20. She is a married woman with two kids and does not have a cordial relationship with her husband.”
