Letter: Frank J. Manzi: Trump should increase the budget for cancer research

After reading Ted Simon’s Dec. 1 Commentary piece (“Cancer discoveries prolong my life”), I immediately decided to write a letter in response.

I agree wholeheartedly with Mr. Simon in his protest of the reduction in the White House's proposed budget of nearly 20 percent of the money that goes to cancer research. As a cancer survivor, I believe our government should actually increase the funding for this program.

In 1993, I had stomach cancer. I was hospitalized three times and underwent three surgeries and was hospitalized a total of 41 days. I lost more than 90 pounds. With the cherished support of my family and friends, and my cancer treatments, I survived.

I also want to thank The Providence Journal for allowing the public to respond to the many actions that are taking place in our country.
