Cold-shooting Longhorns fall to Brady, 56-22, at TexasBank Holiday Classic

Early goes 17:57 without a field goal in second tournament defeat

Points were hard to come by for the Early Longhorns in Friday's second game of the TexasBank Holiday Classic as they suffered a 56-22 loss to the District 6-3A rival Brady Bulldogs in a preview of league action.

The Longhorns were limited to eight first-half points, and went without a field goal for a 17:57 stretch — more than two full quarters — as Brady cruised to the victory at Brownwood High School's Warren Gym.

After cutting Brady's lead to 6-5 on a bucket by Rowdy Elkins at the 3:24 mark of the first period, the next shot from the floor that the Longhorns converted occurred with 1:27 left in the third quarter as Colton Piri pushed Early into double figures and cut the Bulldogs' advantage to 39-11.

Down 41-13 after three quarters, the bulk of the Longhorns' offense came during the fourth period.

Timmy Smithson led Early with nine points, including seven in the fourth period, followed by four from John Griffin, two points apiece from Elkins, Piri, Josh Baucom and Ty Schafer, along with one point from Taylor Hurt.

For Brady, Will Hollis tallied a game-high 13 points.

With the loss, Early will face De Leon at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Brownwood High School's Warren Gym.

In other Brown County action Friday at the TexasBank Holiday Classic, the Bangs Dragons were dealt a 54-49 loss at the hands of Coleman.

Bangs, 0-2 in the tournament, faces Comanche at 11:10 a.m. Saturday at Warren Gym.
