F1 news: Lewis Hamilton shock, Michael Schumacher tributes, Sebastian Vettel 'a brat'

F1 NEWS today features Lewis Hamilton purging his social media, drivers paying tribute to Michael Schumacher four years on from his skiing accident and Sebastian Vettel copping flak from Eddie Irvine.

Lewis Hamilton has attempted to put his “boys in dresses” controversy behind him by removing all of the posts from his Instagram account.

Hamilton caused a social media storm on Christmas Day after being accused of “shaming” his young male cousin for wearing a princess dress, telling him “boys don’t wear dresses”.

The British F1 driver issued a grave apology on Boxing Day but then caused yet more controversy by liking Tweets that suggested he should not have had to row back on his initial comments.

And now Hamilton has removed all of his posts on Instagram, where nearly six million people follow him, as well as the messages on Twitter apologising for the dress incident.

Fernando Alonso has led the tributes to Michael Schumacher on the four-year anniversary of the skiing accident that left him in a coma.

The seven-time F1 world champion retired from the sport in 2012 and just a year later suffered a horrific crash in the French Alps.

The 44-year-old was airlifted to Grenoble hospital for surgery and months later he was transferred to the family home.

However, precious little information has emerged about his current condition.

Yesterday, Alonso posted a video of an epic battle between himself and Schumacher at the 2005 Japanese Grand Prix.

In an emotional message, he wrote: “Missing this. Missing Michael. #KeepFightingMichael”

Ex-driver Jenson Button quoted the Tweet with his own message: “Special times buddy #KeepFightingMichael”

Sebastian Vettel has been branded “a brat” for his behaviour during the 2017 F1 season.

Vettel was embroiled in a tight battle for the title with Lewis Hamilton, but his chances faded in the second half of the season after reliability problems with his Ferrari.

But the fight between the two was also overshadowed by an incident at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, where Vettel appeared to bang his wheels deliberately into the side of Hamilton’s car.

And Eddie Irvine, a Ferrari driver himself for part of his 10-year F1 career, believes the German will look back with regret at his actions.

“Sebastian really let himself down image-wise with his antics in the car, out of the car,” Irvine said.

“[He] behaved like a spoiled brat.

“It’s frustrating for him to get four easy world championships at Red Bull, which was by far the best car and he only had to beat Mark Webber.

“So it was easy to win the championships, now he’s having to work for it. Lewis obviously has now got the best car and he doesn’t have to work so hard.

“It must be hard for Sebastian to see it going away from him.”
