BROOKWOOD — Paul W. Bryant High School defended its D.J. White Holiday Tournament title with an 89-53 victory over Bessemer City on Friday night.
Thirteen players contributed to the Stampede’s scoring and three finished in double figures.
“It’s fun when we get to see the bench get in because they don’t play as much, so when we see them get in we try to hype them up and make them play at our level,” tournament MVP Daviyon Dennis, who finished with nine points, said.
Jared Sherfield led Bryant (13-3) in scoring with 19 points and made four of his five 3-pointers in the third quarter. Kailex Stephens finished with 15 points and Jamel King added 11 points.
The Stampede jumped out to an early 8-0 lead and had a 27-4 advantage at the end of the first quarter. They led 44-23 at halftime.
“That is what we’ve been trying to do. We need to get out to an early start,” Paul W. Bryant coach Shon Peck-Love said. “We realize that we are probably going to be taking everyone’s best shot in the first quarter, so that is what we try to do. Come out and match their intensity and get off to a good start, and they did that tonight.”
Bessemer City’s Nikia Eason finished with 19 points and Thaddeus Williams had 12 points.
