Stanley’s Dream marks 10th year in fight to battle pediatric brain cancer

Stanley’s Dream will mark its 10th year of raising awareness in the fight against childhood brain cancer and college scholarships for graduating seniors in Chester County with its annual 5K Walk Run on New Year’s Day at noon.

West Chester >> Stanley’s Dream will mark its 10th year of raising awareness in the fight against childhood brain cancer and college scholarships for graduating seniors in Chester County with its annual 5K Walk Run on New Year’s Day at noon.

The race day, which begins at the corners of Church and Market streets in West Chester, is named for Stanley Edwards, a gifted student and promising athlete who was diagnosed with brain cancer at age 12 and courageously battled his disease for two years before passing away in January 2002.

“This annual New Year’s Day fundraiser has become a community celebration of Stanley’s life and achieving dreams. What better way to begin a new year than to contribute to the fight again pediatric cancer and to support young people striving to attain a college education,” said Donna Edwards, Stanley’s mother and co-founder of the event along with her husband, Stanley Edwards Sr.

At race time Monday, temperatures will only be in the low 20s.

Monies raised from the event support grants to award-winning research hospitals working to end childhood brain cancer and provides scholarships to graduating seniors. Young Stanley’s dream was to attend college and be a collegiate athlete.

Runners can register the day of starting at 10 a.m. at Barnaby’s restaurant, 15 South High Street in West Chester. Day-of registration fee is $25. Pre-registration can be done online at www.runccrs.com or at the Chester County Running Store at 24 South High Street.

Stanley’s DREAM provides college scholarships to graduating seniors and supports childhood brain cancer research by awarding research grants to hospitals.

The Stanley’s Dream is a fund of the Chester County Community Foundation.

A Treatment Room was recently named in Stanley’s honor at the new Buerger Center for Advanced Pediatric Care of The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

Stanley’s Dream has raised more than $200,00 since its inception, providing 13 research grants to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and 34 scholarships to graduating seniors to further their education.

Donations can also be made directly to Stanley’s Dream, c/o the Chester County Community Foundation, 28 West Market Street, West Chester, PA 19382.
