Boilers outlast St. Bede in double-OT, take 7th place

MARSEILLES –– It took two extra periods, but the Kewanee Boilermakers finished the Marseilles Tournament on a high note with a 70-63 win over St. Bede in double-overtime.

Kewanee went 2-2 in its four games there and claimed 7th place.

The teams were tied 59-all at the end of regulation. Each team managed just one point in the four minute overtime period and ended 60-60, forcing a second overtime. 

The Boilers knocked down 6 of 10 free throws in the second overtime to escape with the win.

Steven Earthely made 11 field goals and added six free throws in the game to lead Kewanee with 28 points. 

Carson Sauer added a double-double with 15 points and 15 rebounds.

St. Bede led by one after the first quarter and by three at halftime.

The Boilers outscored the Bruins 19-14 in the third period to take a two-point lead into the final frame.

The Boilers struggled from beyond the arc, making just 2 of 14. St. Bede knocked down nine treys.

Kewanee committed a season-low six turnovers in the contest.

Jackson Funfsinn poured in 31 points for the Bruins, who fall to 5-10 on the season. Funfsinn also added 10 rebounds.

 Alec Kunkel added 18 for St. Bede, including three treys.

Logan Zarvell drilled a couple threes for Kewanee and finished with 11 points.

The Boilers shot 40 percent from the floor. St. Bede shot 37 percent.

Kewanee – 6-10 overall now – will be off for more than a week. 

The Boilers will return to action Jan. 9 when they will have a rematch with St. Bede. The teams will also meet Feb. 6.
