The Seven Springs Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) awarded two $750.00 scholarships at their recent Christmas dinner. Recipients had to be a veteran, or the spouse or child of one. The scholarship winners, Jason Cole and James Hilton, are currently enrolled at ASU-Heber Springs. They were guests of the Seven Springs chapter at the dinner where the awards were presented by chapter president J. W. “Jake” Jacobson, LtCol USMC (Ret).
Jason Cole was in the Army National Guard and did two tours in Iraq. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge and among several other awards, the Army Commendation Medal with “V” device for valor. For the past sixteen years he has been employed as corrections officer for the state of Arkansas. He is also a single father with a 14 year-old son at home and another son who is an E-4 in the Army Reserve. This past fall he made the decision to make an investment in his future by quitting his job so as to be able to attend school full time. His goal is to obtain a degree and start a career with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission.
James Hilton enlisted in the US Army his senior year of high school and spent two years on active duty during which he did a tour in Korea. Upon leaving the Army he went to work building metal buildings and rapidly moved up to become the superintendents of a small contracting company. This last summer he broke his right leg. This turned out to be a life changing event as he made the decision to start attending college full time with the goal of attaining his degree and starting his own small contracting company. James is married and the father of three small children.
