NEWBURGH, N.Y. — Gov. Andrew Cuomo is proposing a $34 million modernization and expansion of Stewart Airport, north of New York City, to accommodate more international flights.
The Democrat said on Saturday that he wants the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to approve $27 million in public funds, with the rest coming from private investors.
Cuomo says the new, state-of-the-art facility in Newburgh could be renamed New York International at Stewart Field. The airport started offering trans-Atlantic flights last summer, with service to Belfast, Northern Ireland, Dublin and Shannon in Ireland and Edinburgh, Scotland.
A private investment of $7 million would cover installation of a solar system producing electricity for the main terminal.
Project design is expected to be complete in 2018, followed by construction.
