Liverpool news: Virgil van Dijk makes same mistakes as Chelsea's David Luiz - Thompson
VIRGIL VAN DIJK must cut out similar mistakes to Chelsea defender David Luiz on his arrival at Liverpool.
That is the view of Sky Sports pundit and legendary Liverpool centre-back Phil Thompson.
Van Dijk will join the Reds from Southampton for £75million - a world-record fee for a defender - when the transfer window opens on Monday.
Thompson is a huge fan of the Dutchman and believes he will improve Jurgen Klopp’s side.
However, he says that when he carries the ball out of defence he must make sure he gets back in position, something Luiz is sometimes guilty of not doing at Chelsea.

You’ve got to get back in position. I think sometimes he dwells on that a la David Luiz
“It is a lot of money, I can’t deny that, for a defender,” Thompson said on Sky Sports News.
“But for a a few years he has been absolutely terrific, a proper footballer.
“I want him to be more dominant and to help players around him.
“I think he plays within his own areas.

“He’s great when he steps out with the ball and glides past a few players but you’ve got to get back in position. I think sometimes he dwells on that a la David Luiz.
“I think he needs to do that but I think he’s absolutely terrific and it says that Liverpool F.C. are back in the big league.”
Van Dijk could make his Liverpool debut in the FA Cup third round clash against Everton next Friday at Anfield.
He was at Anfield today for the Premier League clash against Leicester.
