Green Bay, Wis. — Khalil Small sank four free throws in the last 51 seconds, giving Green Bay just enough of a lead to survive a last-second 3-pointer and hang on to defeat Oakland 80-79 on Saturday.
Small finished with 14 points, making 5 of 7 at the foul line. Kameron Hankerson led with 19, Sandy Cohen III 17.
The Phoenix (7-8, 2-0 Horizon) led by 10 midway through the second half when Oakland began a barrage of 3-pointers — three by Kendrick Nunn and one by Martez Walker — in a 14-5 run that closed the gap to 59-58.
The teams swapped a one-point lead on nearly every possession down the stretch. Hankerson hit a 3-pointer and pushed the Green Bay lead to 76-73 with just over a minute to go before the last of Small’s four free throws pushed it to 80-76 with three seconds left.
Nunn made two final 3-pointers in the last 41 seconds for Oakland (9-6, 1-1). He finished with 33 points, his fifth game with 30 or more this season, and eight 3-pointers. Jalen Hayes added 19 points and 12 rebounds.
(At) Milwaukee 87, Detroit Mercy 79: Jeremiah Bell scored 18 points, Brock Stull added 17 and each of them hit 3 of 6 from 3-point range. Carson Warren-Newsome had 13 points for the Panthers (8-7, 1-1 Horizon League), who handed the Titans (4-11, 0-2) their ninth straight defeat.
Kameron Chatman had 20 points and eight rebounds and Roschon Prince chipped in with 11 points and 10 boards for Detroit. Tariiq Jones and Josh McFolley scored 12 and 11, respectively.
The game featured 24 lead changes in the first 25 minutes, but Brett Prahl hit two free throws and Stull hit all three of his after being fouled on a 3-point attempt as the Panthers pulled away from a 73-all tie.
Stull had 10 points, and Milwaukee shot 61.5 percent in the first half, but led just 48-47 at intermission. The Titans had a 33-23 advantage in points in the paint. Milwaukee shot 55 percent overall, including 12 of 24 from 3-point range.
(At) Western Michigan 92, Chicago State 71: Josh Davis scored 17 of his 27 points in the first half and Western Michigan rolled. Davis was 8 of 12 from the field, made five 3-pointers and all six of his free-throw attempts. Michael Flowers added 12 points, Thomas Wilder had 10, and Drake LaMont finished with eight points and 10 rebounds for Western Michigan (8-5), which concluded its non-conference schedule with the most wins since collecting nine in 2014.
Fred Sims Jr. had 15 points and Glen Burns chipped in 14 for Chicago State (2-15), which has lost 11 in a row including nine by double digits.
The Broncos used a 26-5 run on their way to a 49-28 halftime advantage. Davis scored 12 points and Wilder added five with a dunk to cap the surge.
