Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies are investigating the fatal shooting of a man who allegedly brandished a handgun during a confrontation with police officers in the city of South Gate.

A Sheriff's Department statement says the shooting occurred Thursday after South Gate officers tried to stop a Lexus for a traffic violation.

The Lexus driver led the officers on a brief pursuit before stopping. While the driver was being detained, a passenger got out and walked away.

The Sheriff's Department says officers found the man in a shed in a backyard where he brandished a handgun and two officers fired their guns several times. The suspect was pronounced dead at a hospital.

A handgun was found at the scene but authorities say it's unclear if the suspect fired it.
