A Hyderabad-based artificial intelligence start-up has named a 'smart-policing' robot after 26/11 martyr Hemant Karkare.
The formal launch of the robot, created by H-Bots Robotics, was conducted on Friday by Telangana Principal Secretary (IT) Jayesh Ranjan.
Karkare had lost his life fighting terrorists during the 2008 Mumbai attacks.
The start-up has vowed to name each of their robots after brave police martyrs.
"It is a life-sized male robot of the Beta version. It is a 100% made-in-India robot. All the components used are Indian. It is a proud moment for all Indians," said Kisshhan P S V, the man who conceptualised the robot.
In July this year, the makers had promised they would come out with the world's first smart policing robot.
The design of the robot was unveiled by Jayesh Ranjan on July 4, 2017.
The robocop moves, recognises people, takes complaints, detects bombs, identifies suspects, interacts with people, answers peoples' queries, among other things.
The five-foot-seven robot weighs 43 kg, is equipped with cameras and an array of sensors such as ultrasonic proximity sensors and temperature sensors.
The bot also has through-the-day connectivity, ensuring that its whereabouts are known.
Police can also tune into the robot for live video stream as the robot makes its rounds.
In addition, the robot also has the ability to communicate in six different languages; English is already built into it and regional languages are under testing.
The robocop, with its autonomous physical presence, interacts with its surrounding environment, gathering data in real-time and detects irregularities without user interface and operates at a fraction of the cost normally paid for technology, cameras, sensors and guard services.
It is specifically equipped to protect and secure public and private areas, such as signal posts, malls, airports, offices, buildings and public places.
