STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — Coming from Denver’s renowned Comedy Works Theater, two comedians Sam Tallent and Jackie Flynn, who will share their stories and life experiences with quick wit and side-splitting punch lines.

For the Chief Theater's annual New Year's Eve comedy shows, stand-up comedian Flynn will take the stage at 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 29, and then Tallent will kick off New Year's Eve with a show at the Chief starting at 8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 31.

Tallent has worked alongside many of the biggest names in comedy including Louis CK, Dave Chappelle, Doug Stanhope and Dana Carvey, and he’s also a founding member of the comedy gang, The Fine Gentleman’s Club, which perform the weekly standup show called "Too Much Fun."

Earlier this week, we caught up with Tallent to get some advice on celebrating New Year’s Eve, resolutions and what he's been up to since his last standup act in Steamboat Springs.

Explore Steamboat: What have you been up to this past year?

Sam Tallent: 2017 was a good year. I performed in 42 states, went to Italy and Belgium, appeared on Comedy Central’s Roast Battle and somehow managed to maintain a happy and fruitful marriage. I love starting my year in Steamboat. I love this town. Thanks for having me back.

ES: What are some memorable stand-up moments from 2017?

ST: I performed on an active volcano at a military base in Hawaii. The soldiers gave me a medal, and I lost it swimming in the ocean. I started headlining on the Vegas strip this year. A man threw up on my shoes while I was on stage and then he gave me $100. I married a couple after a show in Missouri. They got my name tattooed on their bodies.

ES: What's some advice on how you think people should celebrate New Year’s?

ST: Start slow. Ease into the night. Eat a big meal so you can drink deep into 2018. No one likes a sleepy head on New Year’s Eve. Also I encourage dancing a lot throughout the night. And if you can avoid any responsibility on the following day, do it. Jan. 1 is for hangovers, not going to work. Stock the pantry with Pedialite and your favorite snacks so you don’t have to leave the house.

ES: What about New Year’s Eve resolutions? What are are your thoughts on those? Do you have any?

ST: I think resolutions are great. Setting goals is important as is dealing with failure. Aim big so that way if you half-ass it, you still achieved something worthwhile. My only resolutions are to lose 100 pounds and learn to speak Spanish, but I’d settle for 50 pounds and eating more green chili.

ES: Why is it that comedy and ringing in the New Year go so well together?

ST: Laughing is an aphrodisiac, and New Year’s Eve is a great night for new romance. No one wants to start the new year alone. Comedy shows are cool because you get to spend two hours with your date, but you don’t have to talk to them and you both leave in good spirits. Come to the show, and I’ll set the table for a beautiful night.

ES: Any advice for people going into the New Year?

ST: Be good to yourself. You’re a good person and if you’re not, you’re probably unaware of it. There’s nothing time and patience can’t achieve. Drink more water and go on more walks. Steamboat is a beautiful place. You’re lucky to live in this lovely town. We’re gonna have a good time Sunday night.
