Surat: The standing committee of Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) on Thursday settled the Udhna road alignment issue which had been hanging fire for over four years now.
The standing committee decided to follow the court's order of 2014 and go for 30 metre alignment of the road despite Udhna Udyog Sangh suggesting alternative options.
Standing committee chairman Rajesh Desai said, "We had decided to carry out this alignment in 2015 itself, but Udhna Udyog Sangh pleaded us to not implement it as it affected it the most. SMC officials tried to find alternatives and also came up with a few, but they were good enough to be passed. We then decided to stick to the original plan of alignment, which had been approved by the court."
The road from Udhna teen rasta to Dindoli would have 30 metre alignment and about 1,500 square metre of land at present is with four different owners. These owners would have to give up some portion of the land for road widening. Udhna Udyog Sangh would lose about 350 square metre of land.
This had become a politically sensitive issue for ruling BJP in the city. Former BJP city unit general secretary Ajay Chaudhary had suggested some alternatives on behalf of Udhna Udyog Sangh. He quit the party recently and had fought assembly elections from Choriyasi seat as an independent, but lost. "Chaudhary, too, has an office there. This alignment will settle BJP's score with him," a councillor said.
The alignment would help widen the road going towards Dindoli and in smooth flow of traffic from Dindoli Bridge. One can expect some respite from daily traffic jams in the area.
