Changes on the horizon for Williamsville tournament

Williamsville coach Nick Beard said he is already thinking of having some special events for next year's 25th anniversary of the Williamsville Holiday Tournament.

"We want to do something to spice it up, so we're thinking about it right now," Beard said.

First on the agenda will be replacing Pleasant Plains.

"They're going to be playing in the Teutopolis tournament next year, where Kyle (Plains head coach Kyle Weber) is from," Beard said.

"But as far as for the tournament, we're thinking about bringing back some former coaches and former players. Those will be some of the discussions we'll be having after the first of the year."

Still waiting

After 23 years of hosting the Williamsville Holiday Tournament, the host Bullets are hoping that this year's 24th event will be the charm.

Williamsville finished second to Tremont last season for its third runner-up finish in the event.

This season, the Bullets are off to a 8-0 start, and are seeded second behind 11-0 Deer Creek-Mackinaw. The Chiefs escaped the quarterfinals with a 60-58 win over No. 8 seed Pleasant Plains on Thursday.

"I think the top four or five seeds in the tournament could have been interchangeable," Williamsville head coach Nick Beard said. "We beat Plains in four overtimes earlier this year, and they are coming in as an eight seed. They play in a tough 3A/4A Thanksgiving tournament, and have kids coming back late from football.

"So there are a lot of quality teams, and this is probably the most depth we've had in this tournament. It's pretty much loaded, and you've got to be ready to go every night."
