Mumbai, Dec 29: At least 15 people have died in a massive fire that broke out at a building in Kamala Mills Compound in Lower Parel, Central Mumbai in the wee hours of Friday. The reason behind the fire isn’t known but several reports say the fire was triggered by a short circuit in one of the pubs located in the Kamala Mills. The fire at a restaurant on the third floor of the six-storey building in Kamala Mills Compound started at around 12:25 AM and the first call to the fire brigade services was made at around 12.27 AM. Upon receiving the first call, fire tenders were rushed to the spot. More than six fire tenders and fire tankers are in the Kamala Mills and carrying out rescue operations. Water tankers, emergency ambulance, and police personnel also rushed to the spot for rescue operations. (Reactions to Kamala Mills fire)
The injured have been taken to KEM hospital and the critical ones have been shifted to Breach Candy hospital. (Also Read: List of Deceased)
An eyewitness told Zee News that the restaurant had closed down the lifts in the building but there was no information on the exit gates on the floor. The fire is reportedly under control. The KEM hospital Dean Dr. Avinash Supe has confirmed the death of 14 people. The fire was first described as a Level-II fire but was upgraded to Level III as the fire spread.
The dead have been identified as Jeet, Preeti, Tejal Gandhi, Pramila, Vishva, Veena, Kavita Dharani, Parul, Dhairya, Manisha, Yasha, Priti Rajgira and Prachi.
The building at the Kamala Mills houses many commercial establishments including pubs, media offices that have had stopped broadcasting as soon as a massive fire broke out on the third floor of the building at Kamala Mills.
