BSP national president Mayawati said that both Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have trampled the spirit of Indian Constitution as both have worked against Baba Saheb Bhim Rao Ambedkar and tried to change the basic tenets of the Statute which talks about humanity and equality.
Reacting to the statement of Congress president Rahul Gandhi that ‘Constitution is in peril in BJP Raj’, Mayawati said that there was no doubt that neither the BJP not its parent organisation RSS had any respect for Indian Constitution.
“The BJP which believes in Hindutava and thrives on divisive politics has no respect for Constitution and this has been proved time and again,” she said.
“But how can Congress say that the Indian Constitution is under threat in BJP regime as the fact is that during Congress Raj, the Indian Constitution had lost its humanitarian face. The spirit of egalitarian society that Baba Saheb had dreamt of, was shattered during Congress Raj,” the BSP chief said.
During the Foundation Day celebrations, the Congress president had said that Indian Constitution was under threat because of the authoritative attitude of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Mayawati said that according to Indian Constitution, the society should be bereft of casteism, untouchability and sectarian violence but political leaders after Independence used caste and religion to strengthen their vote base. “This lead to a chasm in the society and now it has taken an ugly shape,” she said.
“Probably Congress never believed in the policies of Dr Ambedkar and therefore did not honour him with Bharat Ratna. It was during a non-Congress government that gave Bharat Ratna was conferred on Dr Ambedkar. This partisan policy of Congress proves that the party speaks something when it is in power and does the other when it is in opposition,” Mayawati commented.
Mayawati said that the Congress does not have the capability and strength to counter the canard being spread by the BJP. “The lies will be exposed once Dalits, religious minorities and backwards unite against the misrule of the Narendra Modi government,” she said.
