WAREHAM, Mass. – A Providence man was charged with trafficking after traveling to Massachusetts to collect 112 pounds of marijuana in his new pickup truck, police said.
Police said they received information Wednesday afternoon about two suspicious wooden crates that had been received at Cape Cod Express, a Wareham-based shipping company.
The company notified Wareham police.
During the investigation by detectives, a man arrived at Cape Cod Express and claimed ownership of the crates.
Michael Chen, 40, of Providence, R.I., was confronted by detectives and consented to a search of the crates. Police found marijuana packaged in 60 plastic food-saver bags in one crate, and 52 more bags in the another, police said. The total weight of the marijuana found in the crates was 112 pounds, police said.
Chen was arrested and charged with trafficking marijuana of more than 100 pounds. The vehicle being driven by Chen, a 2017 Ford F-250, was seized for possible forfeiture, as the investigation showed the vehicle was recently purchased outright in cash, police said.
Chen was released on $7,500 cash bail following arraignment Thursday in Wareham District Court. He is due back in court on Feb. 6 for a pretrial hearing.
